METHOD OF DECORATING

What characterises the method "Majolica" of ceramic decorating and distinguishes it from other techniques is that an opaque base is decorated with colours, while crude, they are then fired together, the process is explained in the following: Once the clay has been fired at 850º C. and is transformed in to bisque, it is covered with a cap of opaque glaze base, then decorated using colours and oxides which have been mixed with a transparent glaze and water, they are then fired all together at 980º C.

The ceramist Susan Mussi, was born in England. Studded during two years in Wimbledon School of Art and another two in Camberwell Collage of Art, She is married to a Catalan doctor, they have two children and have lived in Barcelona, Spain since 1966.

She worked privately until 1988 when she opened own studio in Barcelona, dedicated to the decoration of ceramics. Combing the techniques acquired in England, with the classical Spanish method thanks to the collaboration of Benito Arroyo, resident in Barcelona since 1952, whose knowledge in ceramics, comes from a family tradition of Ruiz de Luna de Talever, where he learnt and worked.

Different ideas and techniques are used en the reproduction of tiles in different styles: from the romantic Valencia of the XV11 centaury, to Rustic Catalan art and the Modernistic contemporary art of Barcelona.

In strict collaboration with architects and interior decorators, they create designs in ceramic and also many works reproducing antique tiles for shops, hotels, restaurants, entrances of buildings and private houses, all in accordance with the wishes of the client.

They believe firmly in the importance to affect a good design artistically and technically, not only to satisfy our clients but also for themselves in the standard of the work they produce.

TO MAKE AN ORDER

The tiles of individual designs can be placed to form a layout to the size require. This must be decided when you make the order as the number of borders can change. Example: 12 tiles can form a rectangle 4x3 and it will need 14 borders and 4 corners, but if you put the tiles in a straight line you will need 26 borders and 4 corners. This problem only exists with designs which are made up with individual tiles.

In the number of borders given with a design, two correspond to 4 corners

The designs of only one tile, like borders have three different sizes and three different prices.
